Yonca Lodge, located in Yanıklar Village, 15 km west of Fethiye, is one of the first businesses in Turkey to embrace the ecological vacation concept, which it started over 15 years ago. It is also a member of the TaTuTa Project of the Buğday Association, which started around the same time and continues today.

Located along the Karaot beach, one of the key nesting areas for the endangered caretta caretta turtles in Turkey, Yonca Lodge has been providing volunteer support to local and foreign universities for the observation and conservation of caretta carettas for nearly 30 years. Additionally, efforts are underway to regenerate and preserve the adjacent Sığla Forest.

Yonca Lodge plays an active role in most of the cultural and environmental activities in Fethiye, with a strong commitment to the region’s sustainability. As a founding member of the Small Hotels Association of Turkey, Yonca Lodge has also been a long-standing member of the Fethiye Hoteliers Association and the Turkish Hoteliers Federation.

From the Sesame Field to the Small Hotel.

The history of the land where Yonca Lodge is built goes back three generations. In the 1980s, when tourism was still not well developed in Fethiye, sesame was cultivated on this land. The high-quality Fethiye sesame, famous for its quality at the time, was exported abroad by merchants.

In the late 1980s, the tourism movement that started along the Antalya coastline affected Fethiye as well. After evaluating the good offers, it was decided to sell the land. At that time, Şaban Karabacak, who worked as an electrical technician in a public institution, decided to establish a business after the land was sold. He wanted to make sure his children would work at the hotel that would be built on the land, so it wouldn’t be sold, and they would have their own business. When his request for unpaid leave was denied, he resigned from his job and moved to the area. Hatice Karabacak, who worked in a bank at the time, retired due to health reasons, and her retirement severance pay became the initial capital for the business. Thus, they established Yonca Camp, taking the name “Yonca” from the bank’s logo.

Until the late 1990s, it continued as a campsite and apart-hotel business. With changing expectations and the evolving tourism industry, Yonca Camp transformed as well and in 2006, it shifted from camping operations to a small hotel, taking the name Yonca Lodge. A year later, it became a member of the Small Hotels Book and started to be discovered by more people. In 2010, it became the 11th hotel in Fethiye to join Booking.com, and suddenly, it was discovered by guests from more than 20 countries abroad.

With products grown in its garden, a menu consisting of family recipes, and locally sourced ingredients, it has developed a loyal customer base. Since 2006, it has continued its journey with small changes every year, based on feedback and suggestions from its guests.
